The Chevalerie earring, Van Cleef & Arpels, circa 1970s, with textured gold ovals alternating with links paved in diamonds. A resplendent three carats of scintillating diamonds set in platinum against 18-karat yellow gold. Van Cleef introduced Chevalerie in 1969, inspired by the hammered gold of the Etruscan and Greek antiquities, where goldsmiths worked a surface rather than polishing it away. Chevalerie means chivalry in French, fitting for links that carry the heft of chain mail. The line was conceived as convertible jewelry, necklaces that came apart into bracelets, which tells you how versatile these were intended to be.
